Geneablogy: An occasional Journal about our experiences exploring our heritage

Thursday, September 5, 2002

Just last week I was telling someone that I had never seen a photograph of my grandfather as a child, or of my great-grandparents when they were young. I can't say that any more. My cousin Dorota in Poland sent me e-mail last Friday with this picture of my great-grandparents Jozef and Wiktoria (Mazur) Horbal and their four children. I've cropped it for display here, but you can see the whole thing, which includes my great-uncles Ray and Paul and my great-aunt Della. Based on the apparent ages, I would guess the photo was taken around 1920, most likely in Cleveland, where they were living at the time. That would make my great-grandparents about 30 years old in the picture, give or take a year here or there. My mom was absolutely floored when she saw this picture. So was I, for that matter.
